I have endured 2 days and 2 nights of the student leaders' camp. I am tired beyond doubt and I certainly need a proper shower. I am looking forward in going home this evening.

Time happens to pass a lot faster than yesterday. I spent the first half of the day catching up on some admin work while the communication course for student leaders underwent within the school premises. Lunch was on time which was good. That made everybody happier. And then they spent the rest of the afternoon preparing for the ambassador role in the evening.

At 1930 hours, students were lined up at the entrance as well as the canteen area to host the trainers who prenteded to be guests.
Accoding to the boss, they will get clean up and get ready for a final debrief before they hit the sacks.

I hope to get more sleep tonight and I am looking forward in going home tomorrow. Another 24 hours to go and I will be home at last.

Friday - Teachers' Day

Today is a Teachers' day holiday. I get to spend the whole day in school, working and not to mention that I can only go home on Sunday. That is 3 days and 2 nights stay in school for you. How do you beat that? yeah! I agree I have NO life.
I am listening to Virgin Hitz Radio (bangkok) online while I pen down these thoughts. The staffroom looks like any normal day without the people. It will be nice to have this kind of stress-free quieter moments during curriculum time once in a while. Time check is 1:30. Time for lunch.

I joined the western cdc mayor in the brisk walk around the school vicinity this morning. And then followed by classroom cleaning with my form class before I distributed the common test 2 report slip to them. And during the teachers' day celebration at the hall, I got shortlisted for the English teacher award. The award should have gone to more deserving teacher who are in the service to the school for a longer period of time. My lesson may be impressionable to students but it can never surpass what these senior teachers can do in their lessons. I hereby accept this award on their behalf. : )
The day ended half past noon and I felt a little heavy heartened. If only I could see some of the 2010- 5NC students on this day and find out how they are coping with tertiary education and in what way can I still help them as friend.
While heading out of school, I bump into Mrs Chew and gotten a free ride from Mrs Heng to Clementi central.
And it was a nice surprise to receive a SMS from Michelle : )

Polling aftermath

spent the entire day at the polling station yesterday. The returning officers were gracious and kind to get us lunch and dinner. And they were very accommodating. If only we had a few more of these people at the workplace. life at work will be a little more bearable. The highlight of day was past 7pm when Michelle Chong came to my counter to get her ballot paper. I treated her like any other voters, check her NRIC and issued her a ballot paper. But I was extremely excited upon seeing her. Haha!

I spent the morning sorting out the documents for admin. I just found out that I am in a complete mess. All the written homework and assignments are all stacked together in a pile. OMG! It will take a million years to sort them out. I shall meddle with that later in the evening.

I should get packing for Camp Steel for Monday and Tuesday. The minute I log off I will go wash up and get ready for drum lessons in the afternoon. I once thought it will be therapeutic to pick up a skill. But then I have forgotten how old I am and picking up a new skill at this age is like trying to sky dive with an umbrella.

I am hoping to pick up a nice blu-ray movie on my way home later today and then watch that movie to close off the evening. How nice ya? I got a really nice wall post comment from a Northland NCC senior specialist last night. It is a wonderful surprise to know that people appreciates you for the things you have done. It will be nice to find out how each of them end up in a few years time and see how much they have progress as a person. * ALL SMILE

Work started on the the dot this morning, however students were told to report an hour late. For me, this strange arrangement definitely need some getting used to. Things turned out a whole lot better than I thought for class 2/1. I was able to accomplish the main objective of my lesson during that short 15 minutes time that I have with them.

Later in the afternoon, I met up with class 3/6 for the very first time. They appeared to be a sluggish and non-responsive during lesson. Either my lesson was not engaging or they must be genuinely tired. I am not planning on assuming too much or speculate on that matter. I am planning on giving myself more time to get to know them in the next few weeks and see where we can go from there.

Not much going on these days, I am still making the best out of my holidays by doing a little of this and that at home. The 'N' levels results which will be released in the afternoon. We have got 50 percent passes for the English Language subject, with zero distinction. If you'd asked me, I'd expected worse. Am I happy with the results? Of course NOT!
As for the subject of Elements of Business Skills (EBS), we have gotten 89 percent passes with 1 percent distinction. Meaning, in the student cohort of approximately 70 plus students, two students had distinctions.

Today I tested out the tentative bus route to my new workplace. The connecting buses did come on time and it was like a one to two minute wait at each stop. The thing I am most worried about is that there is zero room for error. What if one day, the driver decide to cruise a little slower and what if there was a traffic jam? I will not be able make it on time to catch the connecting buses. And over my dead body if I get to work later than 0710 hrs.

Note to self: get a helicopter license.

Since I got to work super early this morning, I decided to check out the coffee shops in the vicinity.The layout and pedestrian walkways to these shops were a little different from those 4 storey shop houses you see regularly along Yishun Street 22. Oh well, looks like there is a whole lot of adjusting to do on my part.

National Pushcart Challenge 2010 Aftermath

Two days of pushcart sales turned out well. We won the best creative product award of a hundred bucks worth of Ikea voucher. And on top of that, we were ranked the second placing at the competition.

I am not sure when will I be updating my blog again after today. Perhaps after I moved on to the new place of work in late December 2010. I have been having sleeplessness for the past few days due to the pressure that built up for the pushcart competition. There were lots of on site, last minute decision making, even with the 3 weeks preparation prior to the pushcart challenge.

Now my mind is at ease and I need to get better rested.

I am trying to get better from a flu and cough as we speak.the Chinese medication is just not working for me right now. my nose is choked up by phelgm coming from the back of my mouth and it clogged up my throat making me cough at the next interval of an inhale.
And I have to go through these excruciating 120 scripts of the same old essay plots plus 120 scripts of formal letter writing. put a gun to my head and fire away please!

Marking essays, one after another, what a "fun" way to spend Saturday night. I have 120 essays with the same old plot repeated like a million times over and over again and 120 formal letters to get through by Monday morning. Point a gun to my head and fire away please!

I went to relief Mr Yoonus' History class today. And I bumped into a few familiar faces from 4EC.; Katheejah, Travis and Sahari and another fat dude from the same class. What's his name? Is it bernard? And not to mention, 4 other people whom I do not know in person.

For the first half of the relief period, I sat there like a complete idiot. I have absolutely no clue what I should or could do with my time, other than trying to mingle with the folks. After a while, I got the hint that they did not like to be disturb. The next thing for me was to explore the room. I checked the cupboards for spare entertaining reading materials. And all I found was this old little history worksheet. Pathetic! That very moment, I took a long glance at the room and I found two other connecting doors. One led to the behind and one door led to an outdoor patio that opened out to a huge space, facing the library. I also found a large stash of donated junk stored inside the room, behind.

And guess what? The minute opened the two connecting doors and stuck my head through, the rest of the gang were already on my tail. Not a bad way to spend 35 minutes, exploring. Ya?

I remember that I was never good at Maths. The reason why I got bumped to the last class was due to my deteriorating results in the core subjects especially in Mathematics. My Mathematics teacher back then was Mr Ho. He was a funny teacher. He sounded more Chinese Educated then English and yet he was teaching me Mathematics in the English Language. I often find his broken and mispronounced English while teaching Mathematics a little strange.

My constant failure in securing a pass in Maths made me gave up the subject mentally and physically. I was unmotivated and disinterested when come to Maths lesson. I was often distracted during Mr Ho's lesson. He was clearly aware of my predicament and he kept me engaged in his lesson by getting me to write the solutions on the blackboard. He even encouraged me to try even though he knew that I would end up with the wrong workings and answers each time.

Mr Ho's passion in the subject matter can be felt in every aspect of his physical self. Whenever my classmates got him to re-explained a formula or a difficult to grasp concept, I could see his eyes light up. Literally!

His ever "trying" patience towards his own students is something I hope to carry forward to my own in the future. Mr Ho, I salute you. And a belated Teacher's Day to you, SiR!

Term 3 ends with a one week school holiday. I have gotta allocate time to work on the FYE 2010 and at the same time, clear the common test marking before term 4 begins. The O' levels pre-liminary is still underway as we speak. My only wish is for my 5N to get a decent grades for the amount of blood and sweat they have invested in em books.

I know how it totally suck to see NO improvements in your grade, even after you studied so bloody hard for your exams.
At this point in time, I quote Winston Churchhill's words: "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I am thinking of meeting up with you (5NC) to have at least one round of EL remedial before the end of next week. How? Do respond.

i feel like a failure when i entered 2eb.Aoran and Siyuan busy chit chatting away. Mei Xuan was like catching up with Janelle. guo long was laughing away with lucus. and yi zheng has her bk facing me while she was sharing a few laughs with vivien and wei ting. sakthis and kavi were restless. And some other people were yerning for toilet breaks. it took 20 minutes for us to go through the latchkey passage and i could see their bored to death faces staring back at me. De ju vu. this suddenly reminded me of the time i taught their predecessors, the older 2eb class where i had a similar mix of uniquely unsettling personalities like Michelle who sleeps 3/4 of my lessons and Rachel who was constantly in an emotional mood and shirmaine whose more engaged in socializing than learning. I think the reason why their English is still tragically bad is likely due to lousy foundations and lousy E-Lang teachers like me. I am glad that I will not be taking up 2eb next year when they promote to sec 3. They do need a better teacher to engage them in learning.

Let me drown in my own sorrow and leave me the hell alone!

i am trying to complete this post before my lappy battery runs out. So here it comes. I met up with Mei Ling and Zhi Yu in the morning for a few hours of English coaching. It was not a fruit session because we spent more time chatting than doing work. Next time I will not be the catalyst for menial conversations.

I got a 2nd hand air conditioning to replace the older one. Whose the fool who will pay for a used air-conditioning? Me! I got it for like 280 bucks and the casing looked really run down with scratches all over. Let's just leave it at there for now. Now back to the story, while the air-con men were fixing up my replacement unit, the plumbers arrived. After they assessed the condition of my broken tap, one of them rang up his boss before handing me over to his Tow Kay on the phone. Guess what? The boss wanted 150 bucks to fix my tap. I said: WHAT? No way. I told him bluntly that If that was the case, I'd rather pay the transport fee for his men and have them leave the tap untouched. He kept pushing and he wanted 130 bucks instead. I told him that a water at most will only cost 20 bucks and I will pay not more than 70-80 bucks with labour. And he kept pushing and said he would get his men to start replacing the tap immediately. I had to be rude and I raised my voice on the phone in order for me to get my message across to him. So it went back and forth like a yo yo. Eventually, I got him to agree with 75 dollars. I still feel cheated but for lets just live and let die.

The sound was muffled by the ambient noise coming from the classes at the back. When people weren't hearing the announcement clearly, they engaged themselves in other activities to kill time. That resulted in more people talking to one another and less people listening. I have already feedback to the people in charge, but there was no improvements. Oh well, I should just mind my own business for now

feeling sick in the head with information and stress clogged up in there. i hope matter arises is manageable. some point, my mind goes wundering elsewhere. i feel so unproductive. i am work up a sweat just to complete the most mundane tasks. i do feel like i am operating at half speed. the faster try to be,the lesser i accomplished. it is about time i reaccess my strategies. 2nd day of the week and i an suffering from burn out. not good. not good at all.

met up with two people for el caoching in the morning. we did not complete the entire paper 2, but we had several discussion on tackling the tougher questions. i thought it was fruitful. i hope more will turn up for nxt week's session. it is coming to 10 pm . time for me to get into my pj and go to bed. sleep tight and dont get insect bites. ta ta for now.

I am away on course for two days. At certain parts of the day, I do miss going back to school. I feel that I am more effective teaching in my class rather than to sit there all day long to try to absorb whatever the lecturers tossed at us.
And it gets harder to zone out when they insisted that we have group discussions.
This week is a relatively a slow week. I am running low on energy and I do not have the mental strength to plan ahead. Perhaps tomorrow is a more productive day for me.

Monday without the blues

flunk my 2.4 km run by 1 minute 30 seconds. Blame it on lunch that inflicted the stitch during the excruciating run. I am undergoing muscle pain as we speak. And I have salom-plas all over. Two more days to go for reservist. I think I am getting very uses this kind of life at camp.
Ordered a google phone over the internet several days ago. It has not been shipped out when I checked it last like a couple of minutes ago. Why? I am eager to get my hands on that baby. :)

Sunday. Showers in morning and late afternoon, temperature between 33 to 35 degrees.
I am busy with Bioshock 2 and I am not going back to work tomorrow because I have yet completed my fulfillment at reservist.
I hope a good samaritan, sends me my time tabling for term 4, before Thursday. :)

I have not been updating this blog. Lately I have lost the interest to write. I do have a few issues that I would pretty much like to discuss. But, these topics are too controversial and likely to make eyes roll. Don't believe me? Just wait and see. They are all parked aside in my head, standing by for the right time to be written out here. Ha!

I have been back for reservist since the beginning of the week. I bumped into some familiar faces. We had the opportunity to catch up. It is Nice to see people transcend to a different plane in their lives. Some are in the midst of becoming somebody's father. :)

Tentatively, i will not be returning to work before the 30th of the month. This gives me a little breather from the frantic beginning on the first day of school re-open.
